Dr. Julian Barker MBChB, MRCP, FRCA, FFICM & Honorary Senior Lecturer.
Director of ECMO & Lead Clinician for Cardiothoracic Critical Care and Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia, University Hospital of South Manchester,
Julian has been a Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Cardiothoracic Critical Care at the University Hospital of South Manchester (UHSM) since early 2003. For the last 8 years he has held the position of Clinical Director of CT Anaesthesia and Cardiothoracic Critical Care, and for the last 5 years Julian has been the Director of the ECMO service. Julian was responsible for developing and leading the Respiratory ECMO Service, initially in response to the swine-flu epidemic and lately into the robust service that exists at UHSM today. The unit at UHSM is one of the biggest and most varied cardiothoracic surgical programs in the UK. The ICU has 31 beds and caters for the cardiothoracic transplant service, the short and long-term VAD program, the more routine cardiothoracic surgical program as well as the ECMO and heart failure services. We perform about 1200 cardiac cases a year, 600 major thoracic resections, 40 respiratory ECMO runs, about 20 cardiac ECMO runs, 60 transplants and over a dozen longterm VAD implants. All of these programs are growing!
Julian is a fan of Manchester, having trained there and lived there since he was 18.
Dr. Barker is the lead author of the best-selling book “The Clinical Anaesthesia Viva Book”, widely used by trainees in anaesthesia all over the world.
Julian has clinical expertise in ECMO and has a major interest in leadership, teamwork and motivation. This interest was largely born out of the experience of setting up the ECMO service which now has the largest consultant team in the UK.
